Why have an ECG

To start with it eliminates the need for expensive private GP or hospital visits. Particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or busy work or study schedules.

At Better-Health.UK we use clinically proven ECG technology that offers the same accuracy you would expect from your GP surgery. Ensuring a clinically comprehensive ECG reading.

You'll have an immediate ECG report on the day: The quick generation of ECG findings allows for timely onward treatment should you need it, reducing your anxiety - knowing that the ECG readings will be explained and communicated in an easily understood way by a trained professional.

How does an ECG work and what does it show

Put simply it is a non-invasive test that healthcare professionals commonly do and does not run any electricity through you, it is painless and it measures the electrical activity of the heart from different angles/views.

An electrocardiogram (the ECG machine) measures the heart's electrical activity. By attaching electrodes to small sticky pads which are placed on the chest arms and legs to measure and record the heart's electrical activity from different angles.

The electrodes are connected to the leads of the machine, the ECG then machine captures these electrical signals generated by the heart as waveforms and prints an electrocardiograph (the ECG printout).

By looking at these waveforms we can look at the hearts rhythm and detect abnormalities, such as previous heart attacks, Atrial fibrillation (AF) or other cardiac issues that you may not be aware of.

How do I prepare for an ECG ?

Usually, there isn't any special preparation needed for an ECG, however, it's often best to:
Wear a top that's easy to take on and off or one that you're able to expose a small area of your chest.

  • Avoid applying body lotions and other products to your skin before the test
  • Avoid eating a large meal or having caffeine before an ECG
  • Do not smoke/vape or drink alcohol before the test
  • Tell us about any medications or supplements you take
  • Tell us if you've had a previous ECG and why, what were the results (so that we can compare)
  • Remove any jewellery and other accessories that may interfere with the ECG leads (eg; piercings/rings bracelets/watch)
  • We may require some people to shave their chest hair a little before the ECG. This is to ensure there is enough contact with the skin for electrical signals to be recorded accurately.

At Better-Health.UK we can help guide you

Why do we need to think about keeping healthy? Firstly because a healthy body is stronger and makes us feel happier. Secondly, it helps maintain a strong immune system so reducing the chances of infections, but also reducing the risk of chronic (long term) diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The best way to become healthier is by making small but significant changes which are easy and enjoyable. This will include drinking plenty of water, taking more exercise – just start by doing more walking each day rather than killing yourself at the gym!

Setting aside 30 minutes every day for a brisk walk can really make a difference in just a couple of weeks and the more you do, the more you will want to do. Even those with less mobility can enjoy a short walk.

Obviously what you eat plays a big part in living healthily – and the scientific evidence is clear now that a moderately low carb, Mediterranean based diet, rich in protein, fibre and healthy fats is clinically proven to help reduce weight and can even help diabetics reverse their problems with insulin resistance and high blood sugars.

Sugary foods are probably the yummiest things to eat and most of us enjoy a cake, a biscuit or a pud when we eat out. The problem with sugar is that we are addicted to it from quite an early age, so stopping it can be really difficult. Just like any other addiction, kicking the sugar habit needs to be done carefully. Many people substitute fruit instead when trying to lose weight, but fruit also contains fructose, a fruit sugar. Although not as detrimental to health as sugar, fructose and lactose in milk still can contribute a significant amount of sugar to the diet.

At Better-Health.UK we are able to help you in specific areas with regard to healthier lifestyle, but we need a baseline starting point. Your current weight, BMI, hearthealth and other cardiovascular risk factors can be checked before you 'blindly' embark on a health splurge (that will likely fail after a few sort days or weeks). Let Better-Health.UK help guide you and advise you of your relative health risk factors, together we can provide a guide to a better lifestyle and a longer life.

  1. There are several types of cardiac rhythms but they are generally classified into normal sinus rhythm, various arrhythmias (fast, slow, or irregular), and four specific, critical cardiac arrest rhythms. Key distinctions are often made between sinus rhythms (normal, tachycardia, bradycardia) and numerous supraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias. The 12 lead ECG used is capable of showing all these rhythms plus much more.
